There are so many great sessions at Oracle Cloud World 2024, but I want to draw your attention to one in particular: I’ll be co-presenting with John Beresniewicz and Murtaza Husain on “Identifying Rogue SQL—New ML Techniques for DBAs and Developers [LRN2999].” It's a great honor for me, as I’ve followed John’s work on ASH [Active Session History] and AWR [Automatic Workload Repository] Oracle performance metrics for many years and I have immense respect for Murtaza and his team.

My Take on Ops Insights
As an Oracle developer, application support person, or DBA, you know how vital it is to stay ahead of performance issues and efficiently manage your database resources. That's where Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s (OCI) Ops Insights comes into play. It’s like having an expert assistant always on the lookout, helping you optimize performance, plan capacity, and keep your applications and databases running smoothly.
In some ways, Ops Insights is even more crucial for developers and application support staff than for DBAs. Many DBA functions in OCI are set up declaratively to operate independently, without much intervention. Oracle has hit the mark here: the more powerful tools we can provide to those involved in creating and maintaining well-performing applications, the better use we’ll make of the resources we’re investing in. With decades of experience in Oracle performance, I know it takes a lot of work to master the various approaches to tuning. Ops Insights bridges this gap, putting advanced capabilities into the hands of those responsible for application and database performance, without needing decades of experience.
Ops Insights is a well-designed tool where you’re not just monitoring databases—you’re gaining deep, holistic insights that make your job easier. For developers and support teams, this means a treasure trove of data-driven insights at your fingertips to help analyze SQL performance over time, spot patterns, and fine-tune queries before they become problems. For DBAs and infrastructure managers, the capacity planning tools are a game-changer, allowing you to anticipate resource needs (e.g., when you might exceed capacity) and avoid the headaches of under- or over-utilized systems.
Ops Insights isn't just about the technical details; it’s about empowering smarter decision-making. Infrastructure managers will appreciate its long-term performance analysis and forecasting capabilities, which help you see the big picture and make informed choices about resource allocation, cost reduction, and future preparedness. By integrating Oracle Data Science services, Ops Insights adds a new layer of foresight with AutoML algorithms that predict future resource consumption, even for cyclical workloads. This enables more effective planning, ensuring your systems are ready for peak demands without over-provisioning. Additionally, the ADDM** Spotlight application—which aggregates ADDM findings across multiple runs—allows you to quickly identify and compare performance issues across multiple databases, enabling you to address potential bottlenecks before they affect your users.
** ADDM is Oracle’s Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor. It is an Oracle Database feature that automatically identifies and diagnoses performance issues, providing AWR metrics-based recommendations to help improve the database and application efficiency.
Whether you’re troubleshooting issues, planning for growth, or simply trying to get more out of your database investments, Ops Insights gives you the tools you need to succeed—making your job easier and your systems more reliable.
